Important information: The City of Albuquerque is not a party to the stipulated agreement between PNM, the state and the EPA. The City, however, is a member of the New Mexico Industrial Energy Consumers (NMIEC) that has signed onto the stipulated agreement.
Passing this resolution, while symbolic, is yet another stab against PNM’s most economical source of electricity. Due to pressure by environmental groups to shut down the entire San Juan Generating Station (SJGS) instead of just the two units slated for closure, other parties have removed themselves or their support from the stipulated agreement.
The NMBC urges all other parties to the stipulated agreement to hold strong against the environmental attacks. We also ask that you please show up to the City Council meeting on Monday, 4/6/15, and urge Councilors to vote against this resolution. Supporting the resolution will further undermine the stipulated agreement at SJGS and could cause loss of the agreement altogether and/or the remaining two units of San Juan.
Attend the Albuquerque City Council meeting on April 6 at 5 PM and oppose the resolution. The environmental groups pushing for the complete shutdown of SJGS will be bringing many people. These groups also want replacement power to come only from costly renewable sources, whereas the current plan has a balanced mixture of replacement power with renewable and nuclear sources. We need you to attend this hearing to share thoughts about the contributions of the plant to the power supply and the economy.
Why does NMBC urge support of the stipulated agreement? Shutting down two SJGS units will comply with EPA requirements and reduce PNM’s use of both coal and water. Replacement power can then be effectively managed through a mix of resources including renewable resources and nuclear energy. This plan is a reasonable compromise to protect our environment and provide a diversified portfolio of reliable power – and is the most cost-effective option for customers When: Monday, April 6, at 5 PM.
