NMBC & CEMCO Crusher Goes National

As an organization that provides a wide range of business and individual membership levels, the New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) has developed more than 300 active members and engaged thousands of New Mexicans in the pro-business advocacy work. Now, the NMBC is focused on new opportunities in manufacturing. “An increased manufacturing presence would provide a huge economic benefit to New Mexico,” says President Carla Sonntag. “That’s why we’re very much focused on bringing manufacturing to this state.”

New Mexico is home to some manufacturing, including large-scale crushing equipment, medical devices and, most notably, beer and wine production. The NMBC will focus not only on amping up these areas but also expanding into others. “New Mexico is just starting to pull out of the recession,” Sonntag says. “When we look at the state from a workforce perspective, we have a good base of employees who are ready, willing and able to pursue careers in manufacturing, fueling job creation and the economy.”

To that end, the NMBC is as committed to enhancing the state’s manufacturing climate as the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) is to doing the same for the country. The NMBC is pursuing smarter tax and regulatory policies at the state level. At the federal level, the NMBC’s new membership in the NAM’s State Associations Group, which consists of 51 independent state manufacturers, business and industry associations, allows the group to pursue similar policy objectives in Washington.

The NMBC recognized the value of membership as the NAM waged a multiyear campaign to curb the Obama Administration’s burdensome new ozone standard. New Mexico could not afford to lose its ranking as sixth in the nation for oil production and seventh for natural gas production, nor the royalties from these resources, which provide about one-third of the state’s budget.

“With the current economic conditions already taking a toll within an industry that provides over 105,000 jobs to New Mexicans, there was no justification for the job-killing ozone rule,” Sonntag said. “While the fight is far from over, we believe that working with the NAM reduced the severity of the ozone rule.”

A Crushing Success for New Mexico: CEMCO, Inc., a third-generation family owned and operated New Mexico company, is established as the worldwide leader for VSI (Vertical Shaft Impact) Crusher manufacturing. CEMCO provides equipment, like the Portable Recirculating VSI Crusher Plant pictured in the NAM article, to the aggregate industry for concrete and asphalt production. While CEMCO has been in business in New Mexico for 53 years, anti-business public policy has become a major concern. “Many end users of our VSI Crushers will be adversely impacted by the overzealous regulations coming against businesses from the EPA,” said CEMCO Vice President Jennifer Hise. “We appreciate the work NMBC does in New Mexico and at the federal level to support our efforts as a job provider to New Mexicans and manufacturer of quality products sold across the U.S. and worldwide.”
