The latest jobs numbers point to an encouraging trend: private-sector job growth continues to drive the economy.

The graph above shows private-sector employment up by 717,000 jobs from January 2025 through April 2026, while federal government employment declined by 345,000 jobs.
For business owners, this matters. Economic growth comes from employers who hire workers, invest in their communities, and create opportunity. Businesses generate the revenue that supports families, local economies, and public services.
That is especially important for New Mexico, where government spending and public-sector employment play an outsized role in the economy. Long-term stability depends on creating an environment where businesses can grow and compete.
