In the driest part of the state where oil is plentiful but water is scarce, oil and gas producers continue to seek methods for recycling water used in energy production. In late 2019 NMED Secretary James Kenney announced a new research consortium to accelerate the development of cost-effective produced-water recycling technologies. The research consortium comes on the heels of NM’s Produced Water Act that did away with many of the obstacles to recycling produced water, which has been allowed in the state since 2015 but hindered by liability and water ownership issues.
