HB 531 ATTORNEY GENERAL LEGAL SERVICE CONTRACTS (Rep Gail Chasey, D) This bill seeks to give broad authority to the New Mexico Attorney General to hire private lawyers on a contingency fee basis – for a share of any award or settlement recovered by the State. The bill provides for potentially unlimited legal fees and would result in the disbursement of State funds without meaningful oversight from the Legislature. Money that properly belongs in the general fund to be appropriated by the Legislature each year to serve the needs of all New Mexicans would instead be diverted to private personal injury lawyers, year after year, with little, if any, public accountability.

This bill is bad for business and state economic development. This bill will be heard Friday afternoon (following the floor session). We urge you to contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and express your views.
