More Taxes – Higher Utility Bills

The New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) is concerned about the welfare of our state. Raising taxes on businesses, which leads to increased costs of products and services, and lost jobs is not a solution to our ailing economy. Now, some Bernalillo County Commissioners are looking to raise taxes in a way that will lead to higher utility bills. But the entire state should pay attention. If the effort succeeds in Bernalillo, you can bet the same tax will be coming to counties all over New Mexico.

The ordinance of concern, sponsored by Commissioner O’Malley, will charge a 3% tax to companies who are using a county right of way. It is aimed at taking a percentage of water, gas, electric and utility company revenue. This is the kind of tax that progressive politicians love to pass when no one is looking. But the NMBC has taken note and we will be monitoring this policy to keep voters informed.

The NMBC encourages voters to look at this ordinance HERE and make your voices known by emailing the commission at commission@bernco.gov.
