We are proud to feature Business Coalition members and the work they do within the community by providing jobs, products and services that improve the quality of life for New Mexicans. This week we feature Mary Alice Murphy, the founder/owner/editor and chief reporter of the Grant County Beat, the definitive online resource for the happenings and events of Grant County.

In 2010, after 9 years as a columnist and reporter/photographer for the Silver City Daily Press in Silver City, Mary Alice began the Grant County Beat with the aim to bring her readers the most comprehensive and factual news available. Today, almost a decade later, Mary Alice is still growing her readership and providing balanced, accurate articles about the meetings and events of Grant County.

From the outset of her career as a journalist, Mary Alice’s mission has been to provide for her readers genuine reporting that separates fact from opinion. She publishes the facts without inserting herself into the issues in an effort to be a source of unbiased, factual information for “The Beat.” The Grant County Beat was recognized by the Silver City/ Grant County Chamber as the best small business of 2015, and employs 5 to 6 freelancers to help Mary Alice with the volume of photographing and writing that needs to be done to keep the Beat up to date. The Grant County Beat relies primarily on advertising from local businesses to continue its reporting but has never once charged a subscription for the work they do, a rare stand out in today’s subscription based news economy.
