In the case of a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) contractor who did not meet expectations last year, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) levied stiff penalties against the contractor for what it claims to be inadequate operations. Rather than paying the potential $8.2 million allowed by the contract, the DOE paid only $561,266.

Proceed with Caution When it Comes to Online-Voting: New Mexico is moving towards technology based tools that encourage more citizens to exercise their right to vote. In fact, SB 643 that allows online voter registration was passed during the last session and signed by Governor Martinez. Expanding voter registration may be helpful, but with the reality of cyber hacking and internet threats we must proceed with caution. Read more HERE.

Federal lands for Sale? The U.S. Senate last month narrowly approved a budget amendment sponsored by Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, which could set the stage for future legislation to sell or transfer federal land to state or local governments. Read more HERE.
