The New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) believes that workers and employers throughout the state should be free to have labor agreements and join unions if they choose. We also agree that New Mexico should pass Right-to-Work legislation to ensure workers and employers have the right to choose not to unionize. The NMBC helped educate voters (and City Councilors) in Santa Fe on the problems with Community Workforce Agreements and the Santa Fe ordinance was repealed.
CABQ Mayor Berry Gets It Right: The right to work issue, under the heading of Project Labor Agreements, is now a topic in the Albuquerque Mayoral race. According to an Albuquerque Journal article titled; ‘Mayoral hopefuls air differences on union mandate,’ the only candidate that agrees with the NMBC pro-business, right-to-work position is current Mayor, R.J. Berry. Giving all contractors equal opportunity to bid on and receive city contracts is the right thing to do for Albuquerque and for New Mexico.
On the other hand, Pete Dinelli and Paul Heh say they favor laws that eliminate the ability of non-union workers and non-union employers to receive a CABQ contract unless they sign a Project Labor or Community Workforce Agreement (same thing as a union contract). While other states and municipalities are moving away from ‘union mandates’ and passing right-to-work laws, Pete Dinelli and Paul Heh say they would take the city in the opposite direction.
Who We Elect Matters: Our construction industry has been particularly hard hit with lost jobs and companies going out of business over the past 4 years. The last thing the City of Albuquerque or any city in New Mexico needs is a mayor who wants to limit the ability of 96% of construction workers to work on city projects. Read more about Community Workforce Agreements and where the Albuquerque Mayor candidates stand on this issue here.
In-Person Absentee voting is open from September 3 through September 17. Early voting for the Albuquerque Mayoral race begins on September 15 and goes through October 4. For more information, visit the ABQ Elections website here.
