It was a Night of Inspiration, Recognition, and Heartfelt Tributes…

It was a packed house last night at the 2024 Heroes Banquet:

It was inspiring to witness hundreds of New Mexicans gather at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, united in their commitment to honor first responders, veterans, and community advocates who are making a significant impact in our state.

NMBC was privileged to host the families of fallen first responders, Officer Jonah Hernandez and Officer Justin Hare, at the banquet. We appreciated the assistance from Aaron Jones, CEO of International Protective Service (IPS), in presenting the awards.

NMBC was also honored to acknowledge all active-duty military personnel, veterans, and public safety heroes present at the event. Each individual received a commemorative Veteran medal in recognition of their bravery, loyalty, and service to our country.

These were this year’s Hero Award Recipients:

  • Veteran of the Year: R. Thomas Dawe, U.S. Army Veteran
  • Public Safety Hero: Zachary Garris, Albuquerque Police Dept.
  • Fallen 1st Responder Hero: Ofc. Jonah Hernandez, Las Cruces Police Dept.
  • Fallen 1st Responder Hero: Ofc. Justin Hare, NM State Police Dept.
  • Community Advocate Hero: Dub Girand, NM Special Olympics

The evening became even more memorable and uplifting thanks to the incredible contributions of our Co-Masters of Ceremony: Nancy Laflin, a former KOAT-7 news anchor, and Greg Zanetti, a successful business owner and veteran.

Our keynote speaker, Mark Cage, the current Sheriff of Eddy County, delivered a profound message on the immense sacrifices required to serve as both law enforcement officers and veterans. He spoke of the significant physical, mental, and emotional strain these roles place, not only on those who serve but also on their families. Sheriff Cage emphasized that such individuals are called by God to undertake this noble work, and those who serve feel deep gratitude for the opportunity to do so. His words encouraged us all to live with courage and be heroes in our own lives, extending support to those in need, no matter the challenges or obstacles. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to our event program!

Thanks to our sponsors and event attendees, Rebound New Mexico (RNM) was able to give back to the community by providing college scholarships to the children of fallen first responders.
