The recently created New Mexico Methane Advisory Panel (MAP), along with the state Environmental Department, and New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Division has released a draft of their technical report outlining methane-emitting sources in the oil and gas sector and potential methods to reduce such emissions. The report is a significant milestone in the efforts to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas industry and meet the state-wide requirements for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Energy Transition Act. 

Ultimately, the final version of this technical MAP report will assist state government agencies as they develop emission reduction strategies for the oil and gas industry. Throughout the process of creating the report, participating agencies strove for transparency and robust public engagement. Those efforts included multiple rounds of public meetings throughout the state this summer and fall, and online input options.  The methane Advisory Panel is currently seeking public feedback on the report until February 20th, 2020 before holding multiple public meeting

The Methane Advisory Panel was comprised of state governmental and regulatory bodies, but also included the input and representatives from environmental groups and New Mexico’s booming oil and gas industry , like Chevron Corporation, Devon Energy and XTO energy.
