House overrides Presidential veto on defense bill, increased stimulus checks move on to Republican led Senate

The House voted on Monday to overturn President Trump’s veto of the massive annual defense spending bill. The defense bill, known as the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, affirms 3% pay raises for U.S. troops and authorizes more than $740 billion in military programs and construction. The vote of 322-87, was a highly unusual response to a highly unusual move by a president in rejecting the legislation. Trump opposed aspects of the bill that would rename military bases named for Confederate figures. The President was also angry that Democrats in Congress didn’t agree to a bargain in which they’d lift some legal protections for tech companies such as such as Facebook and Twitter who he asserts are biased against conservatives. The House also cleared the way for President Trump’s $2,000 stimulus checks, but the final decision now rests in the hands of the Republican led Senate. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to bring the bill up today, but a single senator could block it. The measure would need 60 votes to pass, and a roll call vote could take days to schedule. Republican majority leaders have been quiet on the issue but some dissenting voices are calling for approval of the increased amounts for Americans. Republican Senator Marco Rubio has come out in favor of the legislation and is urging others to pass the bill that would increase payments to $2,000. Click HERE to read more.
