Albuquerque Safer Community Places Ordinance Signed: New Employer Compliance Requirements

Albuquerque Safer Community Places Ordinance Signed

New Employer Compliance Requirements are now in effect.

The Albuquerque Safer Community Places Ordinance has transitioned from a proposal to a signed mandate. Local businesses are now required to implement specific protocols regarding signage, safety plans, and worker notifications.

1. Signage Requirements

Applies to ALL businesses. You must display clear signage delineating public areas from private/non-public areas when applying for or renewing your City Business License.

2. Written Safety Plans

Applies to businesses with 5+ employees. A written safety plan meeting City standards is now a prerequisite for license renewals to protect against unwanted intrusions.

3. Worker Notifications

Applies to ALL employers. Mandatory 24-hour notification rules are in place for I-9 inspections, document deficiencies, and any immigration enforcement presence on-site.

NMBC Position & Key Concerns

  • Regulatory Burden: Increases bureaucracy for small businesses during economic instability.
  • Public Safety: Institutionalizing non-cooperation may lead to operational blind spots.
  • Resource Allocation: Diverts focus from crime reduction and economic development.
