HB 546 FLUID OIL & GAS WASTE ACT is designed to conserve fresh water resources, which is precious to all of us. This bill creates incentives for oil and gas companies to recycle and reuse non-potable water being produced along with oil and gas. It incentivizes technological advancements for produced water to potentially be used for other purposes, along with requiring regulatory oversight to ensure safety and protect the environment.
The bill was a collaborative effort by several New Mexico agencies, environmental groups, and oil and gas industry members. It encourages investment in produced water recycling, will result in jobs related to construction, management and supervision of produced water. Most importantly, it will help a thriving oil and gas industry continue to grow in the State, bringing jobs and revenues for schools.
This bill passed the House with a vote of 66-0 and has a week to get through the Senate.
