Now owned by NMCC, the mine is located 20 miles south of Truth or Consequences. NMBC recently organized a tour of the Copper Flat Mine for community leaders along with State Reps Yvette Herrell, Andy Nunez and Jim Townsend for a firsthand look at the operation that is awaiting state and federal permits to open. Is New Mexico a Lobster Pot? Commentary by NMBC President, Carla Sonntag

Recently at a lunch with a friend we’ll call Susan (not her real name), we were discussing New Mexico and how we could make a difference. We were brainstorming about what it would take to move this state out of its ‘third world status’ and into true competition with all other states in the union.

Of course to effect change, you’ve got to first recognize the problem. . .

Susan said she thought the biggest problem we have in New Mexico is that our people act like lobsters in a lobster pot. How so? I asked.

Well, she said, if you ever watch lobsters in a pot, you’ll notice a few things. First of all, a lobster that is trying to get to the top, will step on the other lobsters to get there. And the other lobsters, noticing that one of them is trying to improve his lot in life, will pull him/her back down. The other lobsters will never allow ‘one of their own’ to do better than they are doing.

Judge Awards Drunk Employee 90% of Worker’s Comp Claim

Drunk Las Cruces Employee Awarded 90% Worker's Comp Benefits by a NM Judge: This is not science fiction, it really happened a few years ago in New Mexico. HERE is a brief on the case. The NM Court of Appeals Judge said contradictory employee injury laws were the problem. So, pro-business members of the legislature introduced bills to fix the drunk/drugged worker injury issue. Other members of the legislature, however, blocked these reforms. Eventually, revised worker's comp laws that help (but do not fix) worker compensation issues have been passed and signed into law. This example, however, highlights the importance of electing judges and legislators who will work to improve the business environment in NM.

Campaigns have gotten nastier over the past few years to the point that some people will do anything to get elected. It’s troubling to see some campaigns based solely on destroying the opponent, rather than discussing issues. And it’s especially disturbing when the negativity is all in the hope of winning an unpaid legislative seat.

If a qualified candidate is running, is it necessary to completely destroy the character of the opponent?
