Is New Mexico a Lobster Pot? Commentary by NMBC President, Carla Sonntag

Recently at a lunch with a friend we’ll call Susan (not her real name), we were discussing New Mexico and how we could make a difference. We were brainstorming about what it would take to move this state out of its ‘third world status’ and into true competition with all other states in the union.

Of course to effect change, you’ve got to first recognize the problem. . .

Susan said she thought the biggest problem we have in New Mexico is that our people act like lobsters in a lobster pot. How so? I asked.

Well, she said, if you ever watch lobsters in a pot, you’ll notice a few things. First of all, a lobster that is trying to get to the top, will step on the other lobsters to get there. And the other lobsters, noticing that one of them is trying to improve his lot in life, will pull him/her back down. The other lobsters will never allow ‘one of their own’ to do better than they are doing.

The New Mexico Supreme Court is the State's highest court and final court of review (court of last resort). In addition to reviewing decisions of lower courts, the Supreme Court, as the head of the Judicial Branch of Government, has general administrative and supervisory authority over all State courts and attorney regulation. The Court has authority to discipline attorneys and judges for professional misconduct and unethical behavior.
