Obama’s Labor Legacy: Lost Jobs in New Mexico

A Labor Legacy to Remember: Years of Excessive Overregulation

New NAM/NMBC Study Outlines Cost of Labor Regulations: Washington, D.C., Albuquerque, NM, September 22, 2016 – The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) released a new study today that outlines the destructive legacy this administration’s relentless labor regulatory agenda will leave for manufacturers, their employees and the communities in which they live. Regulations on issues such as contractor blacklisting, employee overtime, silica, union elections and injury and illness reporting will not only result in hundreds of millions of hours of paperwork, but will also come at a price tag of more than $80 billion in compliance costs over the next 10 years.

The point of the meeting is what to do with an Albuquerque Ordinance that will dictate to employers the type of paid leave they provide employees. While the issue is in Albuquerque for now, it has implications for every city in the state. PRC Misled, Corporate Welfare, Upcoming BASH & More…

NMBC Members Give NM Public Regulation Commissioners Feedback supporting Cleaner Air and Carbon-Free Energy in NM (Sign the Petition HERE): An articulate and engaged NMBC member had some the following thoughtful feedback for the NM PRC:

“Dear NMPRC Commissioners: I respectfully submit to all five PRC Commissioners the following comments in opposition to the proposed rate cuts.

The NMPRC may be on the cusp of making a really bad decision to cut PNM’s requested rate by about two-thirds. While the PRC Evaluator may believe that such a reduction is in the best interest of the rate payers, I think that not having the leverage of PNM’s negotiated Palo Verde position will be more expensive in the long run because alternative fuels to supply the delta distribution will be more costly than nuclear and contain carbon emissions; which nuclear does not.

Is Better Leadership in NM Possible?

The reasons New Mexico has some of the highest unemployment, poverty and crime rates in the nation are complex. One thing stands out, however, and it points to the value of quality leadership.

It's not uncommon in New Mexico to hear of federal investigations and court actions to include oversight of an appointed 'Special Master' or 'Monitor' due to problems with how things have (or have not) been done. Regardless of the complexity of the issues, it's evident that leadership at many levels has an important role in where we are today and the ability of our state to improve as we go forward.

So the question is: "Can leaders improve, learn from others and be motivated to do better?" Fortunately, the answer is 'yes,' and the Global Leadership Summit (GLS) is coming up on August 11th and 12th to provide that opportunity. With five in-state locations to choose from, New Mexicans don't have to travel far to benefit from outstanding faculty of world-class teachers and speakers either. New Life New Mexico, at 2701 American Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM, 87124 is hosting the GLS for the second year in a row.

Register for the GLS in New Mexico today!

Is New Mexico a Lobster Pot? Commentary by NMBC President, Carla Sonntag

Recently at a lunch with a friend we’ll call Susan (not her real name), we were discussing New Mexico and how we could make a difference. We were brainstorming about what it would take to move this state out of its ‘third world status’ and into true competition with all other states in the union.

Of course to effect change, you’ve got to first recognize the problem. . .

Susan said she thought the biggest problem we have in New Mexico is that our people act like lobsters in a lobster pot. How so? I asked.

Well, she said, if you ever watch lobsters in a pot, you’ll notice a few things. First of all, a lobster that is trying to get to the top, will step on the other lobsters to get there. And the other lobsters, noticing that one of them is trying to improve his lot in life, will pull him/her back down. The other lobsters will never allow ‘one of their own’ to do better than they are doing.
